Business to KnowDonna’s Cafe Chicago

How long have you been in business?

My partner, Robert Oliver, and I have been in business for four months, although I planned and researched the business for five years before we opened. There are always surprises as you grow your business.

What inspired you to start Donna’s Cafe?

There was a food oasis in the district around where I worked, but I could not find a spot open where I could get healthy foods and just sit down and relax. I kept looking and found a place in the South Loop.

What types of food do you serve?

We offer a healthier alternative to fast foods such as soups, fruits, salads, light breakfast, sandwiches, great desserts and some great coffee. We also have food for vegetarians. Customers can create their own dish, and we call it “Get Jazzy.” Some items on the menu will change with the seasons.

Describe your best day and making a difference in the community.

My best day is family day, which is every Wednesday. There is a daycare steps from me, and they come in and play games. We have games for families to play, and we even serve grilled cheese sandwiches, peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches and cookies for everyone. Also, Sundays are a good family day. Customers come in after church.

What tips can you give someone who wants to be in your type of business?

Do your homework on what other businesses are around you. Research the organizations in your area as well as the churches, and let them know you are in the community and what you are about.

When was your “Aha!” moment that it came clear that this is what you are suppose to do?

The first day I opened when the community watched as I prepared to open and was telling me they had been waiting for us to open. Customers were complimenting us on how good the food was.

What education and skills prepared you for this job?

Being a Chicago police officer for 25 years helped me to learn to deal with conflict, solve problems quickly and know how to work with people, from greeting them as they enter the cafe to making friends easily.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to have more regular customers and expand by opening another cafe.

What are you looking for in a new hire?

First and foremost, they have to walk in the door as though their name is on the door, pay attention to details, be personable, clean and be able to shift on a dime.

What about Donna’s Cafe gets you up in the morning?

Meeting someone who has not been in the cafe before, and they are wowed and say they will bring other customers back to enjoy the jazz.
