Awsaf Alvi Islam, the 15-year-old pedestrian who sustained injuries in a car accident involving Los Angeles Laker star Lamar Odom, has died. Islam was struck by a motorcycle that collided with the car Odom was riding in. Odom was not driving the car, but is said to be “devastated” by the boy’s death. “My thoughts and prayers are with the young boy’s family,” he tweeted on Monday, July 18.
Islam was the son of immigrants from Bangladesh, an avid soccer player who recently had become more involved in his local mosque. “He was very quiet, a good boy,” said Nomani Choudhury, president of the Jam-e-Masjid mosque.
The driver of the motorcycle, 32-year-old Christian Mora of Queens, is in stable condition. The driver who struck him was unhurt.
A spokesman for the car service involved in the accident told ESPNLosAngeles.com: “We are deeply saddened by the family’s loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We are cooperating with the investigation and cannot say anything further at this point.” –kathleen cross
