Serena Williams; Donald Young; Mardy Fish; Andy Roddick; and John Isner continue to carry the banner for America at the 2011 US Open.
On Sunday, Donald Young beat his Grand Slam career best and advanced to round four at Flushing Meadows, upsetting number 24 seed, Juan Ignacio Chela, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3; Serena Williams took out number 16 seeded Serbian, Ana Ivanovic, on Monday in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, and Mardy Fish, John Isner and Andy Roddick all put their third-round matches behind them over the holiday weekend to advance to the second week of the New York-based tournament.
America has enjoyed a much needed profile lift during this final Grand Slam – which happens to be on US soil – of the 2011 tennis season, with several surprise outcomes for some of the younger American players as well as those that have otherwise struggled throughout their professional careers.
Of the Americans that are keeping the hopes of there being an American champion alive in the tournament, it’s Serena Williams, though, who’s most likely to turn hope to reality.
Williams will next face 17th-seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Wednesday in the quarterfinals and Young will face world no. 3 and third-seeded in the tournament, Andy Murray, on Tuesday for a fourth-round match.
