Nicki Minaj’s Fried Chicken Necklace; Stylish or Perpetuation of a Stereotype?

Nicki Minaj's Fried Chicken Necklace; Stylish or Perpetuation of a Stereotype?

Nicki Minaj’s outrageous outfits have always attracted as much attention as her music. When it comes to musicians, her unpredictable sense of style is only outmatched by the uber-eccentric Lady Gaga.

But Nicki Minaj may have over stepped a boundary with her latest attempt at shock fashion. During the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, Nicki Minaj wore a gold necklace with a pink fried chicken wing attached.

In a sense, the fried chicken necklace helps to perpetuate stereotypes that have plagued black Americans for centuries. It also allows us to question her ability to use common sense because a sane black person wouldn’t dare wear a necklace composed of fried chicken.

Was Nicki Minaj so uninformed about the brutal history of black Americans that she was clueless of the negative image that she would be portraying by wearing such jewelry?

Hip-hop remains an important part of our society. However, a lot rappers have degraded the black community by overusing the N-word, rapping hateful music against other blacks, and misleading our youth by highlighting drug and alcohol use, promiscuity and drug dealing.

Nicki Minaj’s fried chicken necklace is a continuation of the debased behavior exhibited by some hip-hop artists. –a.r.

Share your thoughts. Was Nicki Minaj’s chicken wing necklace stylish or the perpetuation of a stereotype long associated with blacks?
