Multitalented rapper Kanye West can now count himself as high fashion designer
after premiering his debut fashion line, “Dw”, at this season’s Paris Fashion Week on Oct. 1. And like any famous designer, West is now facing the wrath of many fashion critics, who have bashed his collection, calling it over-the-top and ill-fitting. But West, ever the resilient star, recently gave an early response to his naysayers, saying that he put his all into his collection.
According to Women’s Wear Daily, at the celebrity-packed after party for his show at Club Silencio, West gave a heartfelt speech, sharing the long and hard journey to Paris Fashion Week and thanking his bevy of supporters.
“Thank you for anybody that didn’t believe, because they motivated us to break our boundaries,” West said. “We don’t know what the reviews will be, we don’t know what they will say, but I got a chance to go to Italy and feel those fabrics.”
West continued, speaking of his struggles to become a designer, “I begged Louis Vuitton to let me do more shoes after my shoes sold out in two weeks, and they did not,” he continued. “I begged Nike, I begged this company to let me do it. And I took out motherf—ing loans to get the best models, to get the best designers, to get the best venue. I gave you everything that I had.”
West then addressed the fashion critics who’ve deemed his celebrity status as a hindrance on his legitimacy as a designer.
“This is my first collection. Please be easy. Please give me a chance to grow,” said West. “This is not some celebrity sh–. I don’t f— with celebrities. I f— with the creatives in this room, the amazing people who spend every day of their life trying to make the world a more beautiful place.”
Ending his speech, West promised that there’s more to come from his growing fashion empire.
“I thank anybody who came to this party, everybody who supported, everybody who believed, because people thought it was a joke, and maybe people still do,” he said. “But I can only grow from this point.” – nicholas robinson
