Obama sends personal checks to Americans in need

President Obama is often so anguished and aggrieved by personal accounts of desperation that he has whipped out his White House wallet and personally written checks to unsuspecting Americans to ease their burdens.

People who believe their cries for financial reprieve cannot possibly penetrate the ironclad fortress surrounding the White House were shocked to learn that their handwritten letters were actually read by the most powerful man in the world and pricked Obama’s conscience into immediate action.

In what will be revealed in detail in a book being written by Washington Post’s Eli Saslow, Obama reads some the letters of Americans daily as they are culled from the tens of thousands of pieces of mail that pours into the White House Correspondence Office.

Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told the media that before two different economic speeches, the President “pulled letters he has gotten and distributed them to staff, to understand what people were going through.”

Obama then responds to two or three of these letters daily, according to former senior adviser David Axelrod.

“The letters help him focus on the real problems people are facing,” said then-senior adviser David Axelrod.

“A few times during his presidency, Obama admitted, he had written a personal check or made a phone call on the writer’s behalf, believing that it was his only way to ensure a fast result,” Saslow states in the Post.

“It’s not something I should advertise, but it has happened,” the president said. “Some of these letters you read and you say, ‘Gosh, I really want to help this person, and I may not have the tools to help them right now. And then you start thinking about the fact that for every one person that wrote describing their story, there might be another hundred thousand going through the same thing. So there are times when I’m reading the letters and I feel pained that I can’t do more, faster, to make a difference in their lives.”

This counters the popular but erroneous belief that Obama is an aloof, cold, calculating and unfeeling Commander-in Chief. Perhaps his cool exterior is a defense mechanism in order for the vast problems of the country and the world to not overwhelm him. This is also Obama’s small way to bypass the massive beauracracy that slows action to a glacial pace and it is a way to circumvent Republican filibustering that has effectively negated needed corrective actions. –terry shropshire
