During the Civil War, three spies, Mary Touvestre, Mary Elizabeth Bowser and Harriet Tubman exploited the Confederate prejudice that dictated Black women were meek and unintelligent; meanwhile, they operated deep in the belly of the beast, where they stealthily gathered intelligence for the Union.

For these bold black women, the Civil War symbolized a call to emancipation and thus they put their lives on the line to assist the Union.
