Russell Simmons faced backlash after publishing and posting a video titled “Harriet Tubman Sextape.” The video features a depiction of Harriet Tubman conspiring to win her freedom by making a sextape with her slave master. Tubman suggested that her slave master raped her in the past, but she would be willing to have consensual sex while framing him.

Simmons posted the video on Twitter with the words, “Funniest thing I’ve ever seen Harriet Tubman’s sex diaries.”

Although the skit was meant to be a joke, most people did not find it funny.

Simmons was ridiculed severely on Twitter and later apologized by saying, “My first impression of the Harriet Tubman piece was that it was about what one of the actors said in the video, that 162 years later, there’s still tremendous injustice. I can now understand why so many people are upset. I have taken down the video. Lastly, I would never condone violence against women in any form.”

However, Simmons was blasted on Twitter for the video.
