Home Depot and Black Families Give to Your Child’s Education

Home Depot and Black Families Give to Your Child's Education
Home Depot has established solid and long-term partnerships with black families to develop and cultivate future engineers and other African American professionals. Twice a month, local stores host workshops to encourage youngsters to explore their options for the future. The workshops offer free instruction on how to build a savings shed or wooden race track. Why is it important you might ask? Home Depot is providing the three skills necessary for children to manage a future career path in project design.

Skill Set 1. By learning that models are small renderings of larger projects, mechanical engineers develop the ability to carry an idea from conception to utility. Participants read the instructions and build a product or that they take home.

Skill set 2. Time organization and project administration. Project management is an increasingly hot career and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future based on construction needs projections. Mastering project management software is a must.

Skill set 3.  Organization and problem solving. Children must be able to identify tools that are necessary in building the product. During the workshops, children essentially learn role playing and hands-on applications as well as answering ‘what if’ questions. Great organizational and problem solving skills are crucial in any career path, and in life in general.

When set skills such as problem solving, organization, and time management are implemented in a person’s life at an early age, we are able to develop productive habits early on in a child’s life.  Not only do the workshops help in selecting and pursuing various career paths, they also help instill a sense of pride and accomplishment for their hard work.
