As divided as our country is, the gulf widens even more when so many of the privileged set want to lead. How easy it is to be one of means and decide one day that past engagements are boring, passé, and a new challenge awaits — something of the magnitude of governor or president. Dr. King could have easily taken this position. He was the namesake of one of the most popular black churches in the country. The Auburn Avenue strip had made many a fortune and could have for him as well. But, Dr. King had a different calling, one that besieged his soul long before Mrs. Parks’ bus ride and incarceration. His commitment to mankind and the teachings of Jesus, the Christ, stopped time and reset history’s course. The reverberation is still felt today worldwide, but particularly where there is discrimination and disregard for human frailty. If we use his life as an example, we never again would question leading a just fight or arduous task, no matter how large or small. With little more than faith, we’d know that Goliath would indeed fade to black. In our souls, the importance of commitment is solidified and would never again will be taken for granted.
