The Rev. Al Sharpton’s mother is dead at the age of 87.
Reps for Sharpton have confirmed that the civil rights activist’s mother, Ada Sharpton, passed away in Dothan, Ala., after a long battle with Alzheimer s and dementia.
Sharpton is still expected to attend a rally today in Sanford, Fla., for Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old black boy killed by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman.
Sharpton reportedly was informed of his mother’s death while boarding a plane to Florida this morning.
