Keyshia Cole and Mary J. Blige
Iconic singer Mary J. Blige rose to fame in the ’90s with her somber and funky hits about pain and love lost, but by the mid 2000s, the pained singer declared that she wanted “No More Drama” and changed her music to reflect her happiness. With Mary no longer waving the flag for music’s broken hearts, R&B fans needed a new queen of sadness. In came Keyshia Cole in 2005, pouring her broken heart all over her records and becoming, as many people claimed, the new Mary J. Blige. Though Keyshia still gets compared to Mary, she’s been able to carve out a niche of her own.
