OutKast: Southernplaylistic
OutKast was the first respectable rap group to bring Atlanta’s music to the national forefront. Their debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, gave the nation a glimpse of ATL’s street life in an album that was widely inspired by funk and black power films of the 1970s. It was also a lyrical juggernaut that proved southern boys could rhyme with the best East Coast and West Coast rappers. Andre (before 3000) and Big Boi’s debut laid the foundation for Atlanta’s prominent run in hip-hop.
