A true artist evolves, he or she is never static. Erik Clark knows this firsthand. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. scholarship recipient and Maryland Institute College of Art graduate reflects on his past, and prepares for a new artistic journey. –tony binns
Tell us about your medium.
I work in multiple [disciplines]. I like to work across all fields. I feel [that] not every idea can be expressed in one style or medium.
How long have you been an artist?
I’ve been an artist since high school. My parents say I’ve been an artist since birth, but really my idea of art was too narrow for me to really say I was an artist.
How did your art education evolve?
My father was actually the person who got me into art. He showed me how to draw a dog when I was about 6 years old and I started drawing comic book characters and things that I would see on TV until I got into high school and my teacher told me stop and draw what I [felt]. From there I took art classes in high school, as well as Gallery 37.
Talk about showcasing your work with the Chicago alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.
I was one of the scholarship recipients and they found out I was actually one of the only scholarship recipients [who was] an art major. They haven’t had one in a very long time so they asked me to be featured as one of the student artists and this year I feel lucky to be able to bring my collaborative partner.
