Movie franchises come and go, without the world giving it a second thought. Here today, gone tomorrow, right? But that doesn’t appear to be the case with the ‘Step Up’ movie franchise, as it gets set to release its fourth installment, Step Up Revolution, on July 27th.
The hype surrounding the film seems to be at an all-time high, and with Miami serving as the backdrop to this slick reboot, the box office returns seem to be just as promising.
Rolling Out took a trip down to Miami to meet the stars of the film,Ryan Guzman and Kathryn McCormick, to discuss the pair taking their rightful place in the annals of a movie franchise that appears to be in it for the long haul. –dewayne rogers
I’m sure that you are excited about this movie. Tell us about the buzz that has been leading up to the film.
Ryan: “It’s been very crazy. I didn’t expect it to be this crazy. The teens and tweens are really excited about it.”
Kathryn: “I think that once the previews came out, that’s when people really got excited. People love the dancing, and they love flash mobs, so the buzz has really been building. I just can’t tell you how excited that makes me.”
Ryan: “You know what’s been interesting though, is that so many people talk about how different it looks from the past three films. I think that a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised by what we’ve done with this.”
How would you compare this to the other three films?
Kathryn: “It has its own voice. Of course, it’s a completely different cast, and there are no more battles, which is what you see in all of the dance movies. So it’s interesting to see how dance can play in an every day setting.”
Now, you have to describe the physical rigors of training for this movie?
Ryan: “For me, it was learning different styles of dance. I originally thought that it would only be hip-hop dancing, but I had to learn everything from traditional to salsa. It was challenging, but it was definitely worth it. I feel blessed by the entire experience.“
Are there any character similarities that you found within your own life?
Ryan: “I saw a lot of myself in my character. He’s a big believer in family, and he’s a silent leader. As far as me in real life, I stay quiet, but I speak up and make my presence felt when I have to. “
Kathryn: “With my character, her only dream was to be a dancer, but she didn’t get the support from her father. Thankfully, in my life, I got so much support from my family. There were little similarities that I found between my character’s relationship with her father, and the relationship that I have with my own father, but for the most part, I’m thankful that my father and mother always supported me following my dreams.”
At the end of the day, why should our readers flock to the theater to see Step Up Revolution?
Ryan: “I honestly think that it’s a movie for everyone. Families can go and enjoy the dancing, enjoy the storyline, and hopefully feel how much fun we had making this movie. It would mean a lot if everyone came out to support, and we hope that they do.“
Step Up Revolution hit theaters nationwide, July 27.
