Black Woman's Death After Abortion Fuels Political Debate

Planned Parenthood of Illinois President and CEO Carole Brite issued this statement: “While legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies. Planned Parenthood of Illinois cares deeply about the health and safety of each and every patient.”

Conspiracy theorists believe that abortion clinics are concentrated in poor, urban areas in order to control the black population, however, research indicates less than 10 percent of abortion clinics are located in those areas.

Nevertheless, African-Americans make up 13 percent of the U.S. population. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, more than 40 percent of black women had abortions in 2008 .

This isn’t the first time that the black woman’s womb has been used for political argument.

Thatsabortion.com caused a national furor when it released a billboard campaign in black neighborhoods, one read: The most dangerous place for an African American is inside the mother’s womb.

Meanwhile Toni Reaves, the deceased woman’s twin sister, told reporters, “She was just fine one day, and then the next day she was gone. We’re just trying to figure out what happened.”
