Describe the new collection.
The Patrick T Cooper collection is a seven-piece capsule resort collection for spring summer 2013.
Why did you decide to debut a resort collection? How did you get started?
Like life the journey presents various opportunities. Having had the opportunity to work in bridal creative direction, I thought the drastic difference to swimwear would be an extreme challenge. Both areas of fashion deal with all the hope and dreams of being beautiful. With resort and swimwear, the human body is open to more exposure so I accepted the challenge, as I believe you can be elegant and sophisticated while lying poolside.
Where did you draw inspiration from for your new collection?
I drew my inspiration from old Hollywood glamour, and I rely heavily on a vintage influence with a huge attention to detail and fabrication to deliver an unparalleled presentation.
Describe the woman who would wear your collection?
The women that will wear the collection are global citizens. She is well read on all fronts. In addition, she maintains a very full life and effectively balances career, family, and personal interests of the arts and pop culture.
What should women consider about their body types when choosing swimwear?
I believe like any other area of fashion design, women should know which colors, shapes and silhouettes work best for their figure. By all means, I believe resort and swimwear should be as relaxing and visually stimulating as the destination that you. By that, I mean never be afraid to indulge in colors, vibrant prints and, by all means, have fun with your choice. We only live once.
What materials do you use?
We use various materials and fabrics in our production of the garments with Italian finishing.
Where does your material come from?
My production and manufacturing is done in South America. I gathered all my materials during my visit to Medellin Colombia – home of the largest fabric trade show in South America.
What was the design process like?
The design process is intense. People often tend to think fashion is not hard work. I beg to differ. It is hard work and I am extremely detailed-oriented. It is work to cater to the needs of your luxury client. The Patrick T Cooper collection is about style and form fitting luxury resort. So we pushed our creative team to make the best product that the luxury audience will be proud to own and celebrate as they embark upon their resort experience for spring summer 2013.
What’s the one type of swimwear that every woman must own?
Shameless plug, a piece or three from Patrick T Cooper
What is your background in fashion?
I worked as a celebrity fashion stylist then to fashion editor and now creative director for multiple brands and now creative director for my own namesake resort collection.
Who do you admire in the industry?
I admire the strength and poise of the legendary actress Ruby Dee and Sidney Poitier. I love the chameleon ability of Madonna. She is never afraid to take chances with her brand and for fashion I love the timeless presentation and color of Missoni.
What’s on your playlist?
Frank Sinatra, Everything But The Girl, Steve Wonder, Joi, Van Hunt, Lenny Kravitz
How do you stay current and abreast of trends?
I don’t follow trends. I tend to research vintage presentation. I am a 70’s baby so I love the shabby chic and elegance of the shag carpet. I love the pizazz of the 1970s. A huge portion of my influence can be seen in my creative direction. I believe that era in fashion will always be in style.
What advice do you have for up-and-coming designers?
Be humble; be courteous; and back up your Blackberry or iPhone because your connections are priceless.
