Compare and Contrast: The ‘Steel Magnolias’ Cast Then & Now
Almost 23 years after it’s first debut ‘Steel Magnolias’ is returning, this time with an all-star all black cast. Composed of Jill Scott, Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Alfre Woodward, Adepero Oduye and Condola Rashad, the ladies will tell the story of women experiencing life and all its hardships in a Louisiana parish this Sunday on Lifetime network.
Dubbed a “passion project” of Lifetime’s President Nancy Dubuc and EVP Programming Robert Sharenow, ‘Steel Magnolias’ 2012 is said to have some stark differences to the 80s original. The obvious difference of course being the entire cast’s skin color. In 1989 the dramedy starred an all white cast that peaked with Julia Roberts’ ‘Best Supporting Actress’ nomination for her performance. Now Condola Rashad (pictured above) will take on that role. Like Rashad, a number of the new black cast members will have hefty shoes to fill. Take a look at the Steel Magnolias cast then and now below. -danielle canada
