Rap had never been so aggressive. N.W.A.’s debut was a scary and unforgiven take on the effects of low unemployment and drug use in the ghetto. Mostly written by Ice Cube and MC Ren, it helped to usher in a hardcore sound that was defined as “Gangsta Rap” in the ’90s.
