Project X Teen Band Inks Deal With House of Blues

Names: Sarah Campbell, age 16, Zach Person, age 15, and Matthew Campbell, age 14

Band Name:  Project X

Years Active: 2

What’s your musical style?

We are a rock/blues band primarily. We cover many genres including; Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Lang, Lenny Kravitz, The Beatles, Corinne Bailey Rae, Stevie Nicks, and Rhianna, but we are working on some original music too.

Sarah, as the lead singer of the band how do you balance school, practice and performances?

When we first started I was in eighth  grade and in eighthgrade, life isn’t as stressful. We would practice on Saturdays and Sundays for an hour and I still had time for voice lessons and piano lessons.  Now that I’m a sophomore in high school, I am involved in more school activities and I find I have less time for things.  Sometimes it is overwhelming and I get stressed out, but I try not to take everything too seriously and make time to just chill in between homework and practice.

Zach, have you begun writing the new material for the band?

I have begun working on a few songs and the next step would be to produce our own material, but for now we just perform cover songs.  We have a set list of about 25 songs that I play electric guitar on, and Sarah and I both share lead vocals on them.

Mathew, you have been a drummer since the age of 7 who are your musical inspirations?

Some of my favorite drummers are Neil Pert (Rush), Tony Royster, Jr., Chris Dave, Ralph Johnson (EWF), and Jen Ledger.  My favorite is Neil Pert because he can do really complicated beats and he has excellent timing but Ralph Johnson is the original drummer for Earth Wind and Fire and I actually have drum sticks that he gave me at one of his concerts.

How did you get on with HOB?

Our band manager was at the House of Blues and he met the manager of the restaurant, Angela Ward. We performed soon after and the crowd loved us. We were invited back and now we play twice a month at the House of Blues.

What’s Next?

We have a free concert at the Alief YMCA on Friday October 26th and we will perform on November 10th and November 24th at House of Blues.
