Denzel Washington was already a rising star and an Academy Award winner (Best Supporting Actor for another historic epic, Glory, about the Civil War), but Malcolm gave Denzel street cred and raised his profile to higher levels. Of course, he went on to another round of Oscar nominations (Malcolm X, Hurricane) before getting his second Academy Award and first for Best Actor in Training Day.
