Al Freeman Jr. played Malcolm’s leader and mentor Elijah Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam. The late, great Freeman was a pioneer who won an Daytime Emmy Award for his work on daytime soap operas. In a strange twist, Freeman died in August of 2012 at the age of 78 — the 20th year since Malcolm X came to the big screen.
