The fact that mentally-disturbed 20-year-old Adam Lanza had access to high-powered weapons and used them to slaughter 26 people, including his own mother and 20 children under age 10, may be the tipping point to reignite substantive discussion — and moreover, meaningful action — to lasso in the proliferation of assault weapons in the United States.
President Obama, speaking before the relatives of the slain in Newtown, made the proclamation that he will leverage “whatever power” he has as the commander-in chief to get the gun control that he promised during his first term. Of course, stricter gun legislation is something the National Rifle Association, militia groups and other pro-gun proponents loathe and fear, saying that any legislation that slows the sale of any weapons is in violation of the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. And the debate rages on.
