Mary J. Blige was just a round-the-way–girl from Yonkers, N.Y., when she debuted on this influential album. With production helmed by Sean “Puffy” Combs and the Hitmen, this LP (and TLC’s aforementioned debut) was the beginning of the end of the New Jack Swing era and the first glimpse into what hip hop-influenced R&B would sound like for the rest of the decade.
