Remembering Dr. King: 10 R&B songs that defined the Civil Rights Movement

“To Be Young Gifted and Black” by Nina Simone

One of the most gifted songwriters and musical interpreters of all time, Simone penned what would become a standard amongst black vocalists. She wrote the ballad as tribute to her close friend, famed author Lorraine Hansberry, who wrote the classic play “A Raisin In the Sun” about her family’s experiences in segregated Chicago.
