Aaliyah’s break from R. Kelly in 1996 and emergence as a more mature, sophisticated artist was due in large part to her pairing with the then relatively-new producer Timbaland. In Timbo, she found an innovative sound that immediately helped her stand apart on urban radio. And in Aaliyah, Timbaland found an established artist that gave him the platform to announce his trademark sound to the world — a sound that would later spawn career-defining hits for Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado.
