She made her name as a teenage battle rapper in the late ’80s before breaking through to the charts in the early-to-mid 1990s, and she’s one of hip-hop’s greatest female acts ever. The First Lady of Brooklyn hip hop has recorded numerous nods to NYC’s biggest borough, from “Kickin’ 4 Brooklyn” to the reggae-tinged ode “Brooklyn.”
