The debate about natural hair versus weaves and relaxers has been going on for years, and last week Tamar Braxton and Nicole Ari Parker appeared on “The Ricki Lake Show” to give their opinion on the matter.
Braxton was allegedly quoted as saying that “Black women’s natural hair is a hot mess,” although, a clip of her saying that has not been found on the web.
However, in an actual clip from the show, Parker explains that, although she loves wigs and weaves, she decided to wear her hair natural at home so that her daughter would see the beauty in her own hair and appearance and not feel the need to change herself to be validated.
“I love weaves and wigs. I’m not against it,” said Parker, who recently launched her own Save Your Do hair wrap. “But I needed my daughter to see me look like this [natural]. Because right now, at 7 years old, mommy is still the focus point. This is her definition of beautiful right now. I need her to know this was beautiful.”
“I really wanted to give her hair a chance to be one of her options,” she added. “I think, especially for black women and our black daughters, our young black women, we have to encourage them that, ‘the way you are is just fine. You are beautiful!’”
