F.W. Woolworth Store: located at 134 South Elm Street, Greensboro, N.C. African-American students from nearby HBCU North Carolina A&T began a student movement that gave youthful vigor to the civil rights movement when they sat in at the lunch counter here in 1961. The sit-ins were almost immediately duplicated at other stores in other states, most infamously and violently at this Jackson, Miss. Woolworth store (below).
