A-list athletes and celebrities took to social media to express their condolences to unarguably one of the most beloved, successful and iconic owners in all of sports history, Dr. Jerry Buss, the late owner of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Buss died on Monday, Feb. 18, of complications stemming from cancer.


“He helped put the league in the direction that is in now,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern said of the self-made millionaire who attained his riches through real estate acquisitions before purchasing the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979 for $60 million.

Over the proceeding decades, Buss and the Lakers went on to play in 16 championship series, winning 10 of them, making them the second winningest franchise in NBA history behind the Boston Celtics. Moreover, his players, particularly the venerated Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, loved the late owner immensely and loved playing hard for him.
