Black History Month: 5 forgotten moguls of black music

Al Bell

Greatest success: Stax Records

After joining the Memphis-based Stax/Volt label in 1965 as a promotions whiz, Bell eventually rose to executive vice president of the company, helping to launch legendary artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, Johnny Taylor and spearheading the Staple Singers’ transition from gospel to pop/R&B music. Bell came up with Stax’s pro-black imagery and “Soulsville” marketing campaign. He would eventually become co-owner of the label.
