The night was full of surprises, as “American Idol” opened with both Bon Jovi and last year’s winner Phillip Phillips. The evening quickly entered into eliminations, naming Candice Glover, Kree Harrison and Angie Miller the top three contenders.
While the night seemed to be running in the right direction, it quickly became very clear as the selections progressed that America had made a huge mistake. Jaws dropped as it came down to Latin lover Devin Velez and soulful gospel singer Curtis Finch Jr., both of whom were considered the strongest males in the competition.
Finch, who covered Fantasia’s “I Believe” on Wednesday’s performance show, sadly found himself singing for salvation. Although Nicki Minaj, who was visibly and verbally upset, and fellow judge Keith Urban gave him a standing ovation and the crowd chanted “Save! Save! Save!” Finch was sent packing.
Who will be eliminated next? Stay tuned. “American Idol” airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox. –ruthie hawkins
