An icon of the flower-power era, Joplin wrestled with insecurities and depression, and developed a heroin habit towards the end of the 1960s. By the time she split from her band, Big Brother & the Holding Company, to begin working on her solo recordings, she was having cocaine and heroin delivered to the studio. She died of an overdose at 27 years old.
