The legacy of Black culture was on display and being taught at the 2013 Black History & Culture Showcase in Philadelphia. Executive Producer Everett Stanten, states that “A greater awareness and appreciation of African American history and culture will: Heighten and reinforce African American pride. History is the basic knowledge that nourishes self-respect. The more one knows and understands about their history and culture, the greater the impact on their self-esteem and racial pride.” Held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center every Easter Weekend, the two-day event featured the Black Inventions Museum, Lest We Forget Black Holocaust Slavery Museum, The Tuskeegee Airmen, The Montford Point Marines, unique hand made products and educating and inspiring panel discussions that gave meaningful insights along with plans of action to improve participants both personally and the Black community on a national basis.
Long time radio personality and activist Bob Law along with Philadelphia marketing leader Norm Bond introduced “The Million Dollar Black Spending Power Campaign” to create a self supported movement that will help both Black business and Black consumers. Eric Hamilton, co founder of aroundthewayapp.com was there showing their support of the initiative and giving consumers an easy way to actually find Black owned businesses anywhere they are. The free app is available in the android and apple stores and already has over 15,000 black business listings. Businesses can get listed in the app for free by visiting the website.
900-am WURD , the only African-American owned and operated talk radio station in Pennsylvania, brought in a large number of exciting speakers and panelist, including Sonia Sanchez, Universal African Dance and Drum ensemble 30th anniversary performance and 10th anniversary symposium “Sisters Speak: The Impact of Race, Culture, and History on Relationships. This powerful panel consisted of Yaba Blay, PhD, Ruth King, MA, Robin L. Smith, PhD, Beverly Toporowski, MD and gave the packed auditorium tons of insightful and useful information.
