Allen Iverson and NBA players who squandered their vast fortunes

The simple statement that Allen Iverson didn’t even “have money for a cheeseburger” registered about 7.8 on the social Richter scale, blowing away millions of fans and sports observers alike with disbelief. Gone are all the luxury whips, the fancy clothes and his mansions — and his infamous entourage.

How does a man go from earning anywhere between $150 to $200 million during his legendary career and, just three years removed from his playing days, have nothing to show for it? It actually takes work to spend that kind of money — mostly from his large entourage who lived off his once fat wallet and soaked in the rays of fame that were cast Iverson’s way.

Today, the man known as A.I. and “The Answer” can’t seem to find one to close the vast crater hole in his bank account and needed a $60 gift from his now ex-wife when he stood in court and said he didn’t have money for a hamburger.

Sports Illustrated published an outstanding, albeit heartbreaking, feature on the fact that nearly 80 percent of multimillionaire NBA athletes are completely broke after only five years away from the game.

So Iverson is not alone in this personal horror story. Here are other NBA players who squandered their vast fortunes.
