One of the first blacks to own a racehorse, Isaac Burns Murphy is the first jockey to win three Kentucky Derbys (1884, 1890, and 1891). Winning the KentuckyOaks, Kentucky Derby, and the Clark Handicap all in the same year (1884), this phenomenal jockey won 628 of 1,412 races, a matchless record; this also includes our American Derby wins (1884, 1885, 1886, 1888), and five Latonia Derby wins (1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1891). He was the first jockey inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY.
