Multiples gunmen opened fire in New Orleans’ 7th Ward during Mother’s Day Parade.
As many as 17 people were injured, including a 10-year-old boy and girl. They were marching in the second-line parade – a procession of attendees dancing behind the brass band – when gunfire erupted at the intersection of Frenchmen and Villere streets.
Ronal Serpas, the New Orleans police superintendent, reported there may have been as many as three shooters, and that two different types of weapons were likely used.
“These are unusual circumstances. We have second lines which occur in the city of New Orleans virtually every weekend at this time of the year. We had a full complement of police officers. It appears that these 2 or 3 people just for a reason unknown to us, started shooting at towards, or in the crowd. It was over in just a couple seconds.”
“It’s strictly an act of street violence in New Orleans,” offers Mary Beth Romig, a spokeswoman for the FBI in New Orleans, ruling out terrorism.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance video.
“We’ll get them. We have good resources in this neighborhood,” Serpas confirms.
