Dr. Maya Angelou’s newest book, Mom & Me & Mom, explores her complicated relationship with her mother. Her latest memoir, released a month before Mother’s Day on April 2, tells the story of her journey of getting to know the woman whom she referred to as ‘Lady’ rather than mom.
Angelou and her brother were separated from their mother for manyyears while they were fairly young. The pair lived with their grandmother while their mother struggled with her on and off again marriage. Mom & Me & Mom tells the story of how Angelou and her mother were able to reconnect later in her life.
“When teachers or people in authority put me down or in one way or another tried to make me feel less than equal to what they thought I should be – my mother was on my side,” she said.
So far, the reviews of Angelou’s newest memoir have been mostly positive. See some of the reviews here.
