For the last few years, “Molly,” aka MDMA has been the so-called popular drug of hip-hop, with rappers like 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross, whether playfully or regretfully, praising the drug in their songs. But hip-hop’s new rising king, Kendrick Lamar, isn’t too keen on the drug and recently spoke out against it in hip-hop.
In a recent interview with MTV News, Kendrick told Sway Calloway that he thinks that the Molly trend was never that great and that it needs to be ditched by rappers and hip-hop fans.
“Sometimes you have the trends that [are] not that cool,” Kendrick said. “You may have certain artists portraying these trends and don’t really have that lifestyle, and then it gives off the wrong thing. And it becomes kinda corny after a while.”
In Kendrick’s latest video for “B—-, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” Kendrick holds a funeral for Molly and ends it with a simple message at the end, “Death to Molly.”
Although Kendrick didn’t name any specific rappers, some of his hip-hop counterparts have certainly received blunt criticisms over their praise of the drug in recent times. Earlier this year, Rick Ross came under scrutiny for rapping about slipping Molly into a woman’s drink and raping her.
But according to Kendrick, he just thinks it’s uncool to still be rapping about Molly.
“When everybody consciously now uses this term or this phrase and putting it in lyrics, it waters the culture down,” Kendrick explained. “So it’s really just time to move on.”
Unfortunately, lameness isn’t the only thing that Molly proponents have to worry about. The drug can also cause sleeplessness, depression, anxiety and seizures.
