Houston rapper Riff Raff has his fair share of detractors. With his “persona” walking the line between ironic performance art and complete phoniness, he’s gotten a lot of fans and a lot of critics over the past two years. It looks like Hot 97 programming director Ebro falls into the latter category. After Riff Raff’s appearance on the radio station earlier this week, Ebro made it known that he felt that the rapper was essentially mocking hip-hop culture.
“You’re a nice fellow [but] I’m not gonna dap you off for that freestyle,” said Ebro after Riff Raff freestyled on the air. “There were a couple of pieces in there where I was like ‘Ok, there’s something here.’ There were a lot of other pieces in there I was like ‘What the f-ck is happening right now?'”
Ebro’s distaste for Riff Raff has apparently led to the rapper not being invited to this year’s Summer Jam–and he hopped on Twitter to vent about being “banned” by Ebro.
“HAHA SO HOT 97 BANNED ME FROM SUMMER JAM 2013 iN NEW YORK EVEN THO i GOT 2ND PLACE iN VOTES,” Riff tweeted. “i CAN’T BELiEVE THAT AFTER ALL i HAVE DONE FOR U THAT U WOULD STOOP SO LOW AS TO BANNED ME FROM SUMMER JAM iN NEW YORK @OldManEbro @Hot97”
“i CAN FORGiVE U FOR THAT WEAK A– AMBUSH iNTERViEW STUNT U PULLED AT HOT 97 BUT TO BANNED ME FROM SUMMER JAM iS SELFiSH & FOUL @OldManEbro” his rant went on. “i CAN’T BELiEVE THAT iN 2013 THERE iS STiLL PREJUDiCE & RACiST iDiOTS WHO ARE iN CHARGE OF iMPORTANT MEDiA OUTLETS”
“i WONDER HOW MANY MAJOR EVENTS, MAGAZiNE COVERS & TV SHOWS THAT i WOULD HAVE BEEN A PART OF iF THERE WEREN’T SO MANY PREJUDiCE OWNERS”
Despite Riff Raff’s rant, Ebro said that there was no ban–the former “Gs To Gents” contestant simply wasn’t invited. Ebro clarified the situation after a fan laughed at Raff for being “banned.”
“I didn’t [ban Riff Raff] tho. He made it up like he did his whole schtick” Ebro tweeted.
“@tunelinks: let me get this straight. So you’re saying Riff Raff is not banned and can go to Hot 97 correct?<– not banned. Not invited” Ebro also made clear.
