Gunplay fires off at SOBs showcase in New York City (photos)

Gunplay made himself heard at SOBs in New York City this week. The most controversial rapper on Maybach Music Group’s roster, the Miami native found himself among fervent fans and supporters when he finally took the stage sometime around midnight; but they were in the minority.

The crowd was decidedly hipster — glad to see the fiery rhymer perform, but not quite his kinda crowd. Though a fight did break out, which probably made it a little closer to what he prefers.

Of course, prior to his grand entrance, a number of up-and-comers tried to keep things fresh and moving. And with the show being presented by Power 106’s “Breakfast Club,” DJ Envy and Charlemagne Tha God did the honors of presenting Gunplay to the crowd.

A recurring theme throughout the evening was Gunplay “beat those charges.” He was staring down a prison sentence at the tail-end of 2012 after surveillance video surfaced of the rapper appearing to pistol-whip an accountant in his Miami offices. The victim refused to cooperate with authorities, so Gunplay got off. Not quite the “acquittal” he and others were celebrating all night, but he’ll take it, I suppose.

Gunplay performed a string of his popular collaborations — including his joint with Kendrick Lamar (“Cartoons & Cereal”) and his  verse on A$AP Rocky’s “Ghetto Symphony.” Harlem rapper Vado and fellow MMG star Torch also helped Gunplay bring the ruckus.
