Black Music Month: The 20 greatest songwriters in R&B history

Memphis Blues Ball 2007

No. 12 Isaac Hayes & David Porter

Before he was a solo superstar, Isaac Hayes was one-half of the songwriting mainstays of Stax Records. Hayes and Porter turned Sam & Dave into chart-topping stars with a string of classic soul hits, as well as penning cuts for other label stars like Carla Thomas and the legendary Otis Redding.

Notable songs: “Hold On, I’m Coming,” “Soul Man,” “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby” (Sam & Dave), “B-A-B-Y” (Carla Thomas)
