Black Music Month: The 20 greatest songwriters in R&B history

Playing For Good - Philanthropic Summit Day 2

No. 9 Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis

In many ways the bridge between Prince’s “Minneapolis Sound” and Teddy Riley’s New Jack Swing, Jam and Lewis took over the pop and R&B charts in the late 1980s. Early success writing for acts like the S.O.S. Band and Alexander O’Neal gave way to even greater heights with Janet Jackson and New Edition.

Notable songs: “Can You Stand the Rain,” “If It Isn’t Love” (New Edition), “On Bended Knee” (Boyz II Men), “Control,” “Love Will Never Do Without You” (Janet Jackson)
