Yesterday was a tremendous day when it comes to the LGBT rights movement. After months of debate, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. SCOTUS also ruled 5-4 that there is “no standing” in the earlier Prop 8 case, Hollingsworth v. Perry, in which Prop 8 was challenged as a violation of the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. SCOTUS deemed that the trial judge’s decision ruling Prop 8 unconstitutional back in February will be recognized.
