Almost everything about Maxwell’s debut album sought to defy conventional expectations of what an R&B LP could do and be. Using classic, flowing concept albums by Marvin Gaye as an obvious jumping-off point, the Brooklyn-bred crooner crafted a gorgeous record that told the story of the typical adult romantic relationship.
