We caught up with Sherri Shepherd to discuss her book Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes (even if you don’t have it), new health regimen and how she relaxes with such a busy life.
Why did you write this book?
After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I wanted to share my common sense plan and not want people to be paralyzed with fear once they are diagnosed with diabetes or hear the phrase “pre-diabetes.” I wanted them to know that you can live an amazing life with lots of energy by making simple changes in eating and exercising.
Did you learn anything from writing this book?
I dedicated the book to my mom who died from complications of diabetes at 41. I learned she was a pretty cool person but she didn’t have the knowledge needed to combat the disease. If she had what I have written in my book, maybe it would have been a little different. I want the person who is overwhelmed after learning they have diabetes to be able to look at the book and go, “Oh, OK if I do that … OK…” – I want that from the person who reads my book.
Do you see writing as a new career?
No but I would love to write a book series on children.
If you could change anything in the world, what would it be? Why?
I would want people to step out of their comfort zone more. To feel OK about pursuing something that scares them. I think we are held back a lot by fear. I think people are holding on to jobs that they don’t like just because they need a job. Kids have the best imaginations and somewhere along the line we lose that and become fearful and get stagnant.
You are a busy woman; when do you ever have time for you?
When I sit in the back of a taxicab … I actually fall asleep everytime. My husband thinks I’m narcoleptic.
How often do you exercise and what type?
Boot camp three times a week, dancing and I also go to the park with my son, Jeffrey.
Do you really read your social media pages?
Yes! I answer my own tweets; I can’t answer all of them but I do.
Any plans on going back into acting?
Yes. I am filming a movie with Chris Rock, Finally Famous. I play Chris Rock’s ex girlfriend who always wanted to marry him. I love acting; I miss it so much.
What’s the one thing you want to be remembered for?
My heart. Hopefully, people will remember I had a good heart.
