Why Jay-Z dissed Miley Cyrus on the song, ‘Somewhere in America’

On his recently released album, Magna Carter Holy Grail, Jay-Z does not hold back on the disses. He goes after Lil Wayne, the NFL, George Washington, and sports agent, Scott Boras.

However, Jay-Z aimed his most memorable diss at Miley Cyrus. On the song “Somewhere in America,” Jay-Z raps the lines, “When I was talking Instagram, last thing you wanted was your picture snapped, Feds still lurking, They see I’m still putting work in, Cause somewhere in america Miley Cyrus is still twerkin.'”

Jay-Z follows the line with a chuckle and continues, “Twerk, Miley, Miley, Miley, Only in America.”

The subtle diss likely stems from what appears to be Miley Cyrus’ sudden embrace of hip-hop culture. In 2009, Cyrus released “Party in the U.S.A.” On the song, Cyrus sings, “A Jay-Z song was on, and a Jay-Z song was on.”

But when asked by a reporter which Jay-Z song she was referring to, Cyrus responded by saying “I’ve never heard a Jay-Z song. I don’t listen to pop music.”

The comment caused most people to believe that Cyrus was not a fan of hip-hop. That would seem to be the case if she had never heard a song by one of the greatest rappers in history.

But four years later, Cyrus has become enchanted by hip-hop and “ratchet” culture. She has befriended Snoop, Juicy J and other rappers. She also sports a gold grill in her mouth and recently twerked on stage with Juicy J a few months ago.

Jay-Z obviously took noticed of Cyrus’ transformation and decided to have some fun with it. By saying “Only in America” at the end of the verse, Jay-Z laughs at the irony of Cyrus lacking hip-hop knowledge, in 2009,  only to find love for the art form and culture in 2013.
