Do you seek inspiration or does it find you?
I seek inspiration spiritually each day from powers on high. However artistically, a song, a lyric, a tune etc., may come to me from out of nowhere.
What led you to art in general and to your art form(s) in particular?
Like most, I started singing and in the church … I realized my love for music at a young age while singing in the church choir and playing the drums at my grandfather’s church in Chicago.
Have you and your artistry ever been involved in traditional business? In addition to mastering their art, what other skill sets to you recommend that artists develop if they want to be successful?
I believe it’s very important to develop good communication skills. I so believe that, “where there is an understanding, there is no room for misunderstandings.”
How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?
I believe, practice, practice, practice is key, along with being mindful of current trends and the desire and courage to dare to be different.
How do you map out your goals?
Being blessed with the opportunity to rise each day doing what I love most, which is singing and performing. If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.
How do you measure your success?
If I’m able to help and or to make a difference in just one person’s life, through word, song or deed … then my labor has not been in vain.
What affirmations do you repeat to yourself that contribute to your success?
In the words of my mother, “Never forget who and whose you are.”
What software, app or other technological innovation has made the biggest difference in your life or career?
Social media has made the biggest difference in my life. I love to tweet, comment on Facebook and post pictures on Instagram because it allows me to share my experiences and ventures with people all over the world as well as be a part of theirs.
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
Chicago is now the No. 1 murder capital. If I could change anything, I would change the mindset of all those involved in violence to stop these senseless killings.
In your estimation, who has achieved an iconic status?
In my opinion, Michael Jackson earned the iconic title. So much so, that he was in constant competition with himself.
