Stokely Carmichael — The man who inspired the “Black Power” movement in the middle of the 1960s through the coining of the oft-repeated phrase “black power.” After becoming the leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and then becoming the “prime minister” of the Black Panther Party, Carmichael and his wife opted to migrate back to Africa, and became citizens of the country of Uganda in 1973. As part of his cultural revival, Carmichael also elected to change his name to Kwame Toure, a traditional African name.
