Atlanta children’s hospital reconsiders; Black teen has been added to heart transplant list

Anthony Stokes

Anthony Stokes, 15, is “happy” according to his mother Melencia Hamilton after hearing the news that his name has been added to the heart transplant list. The story broke on Monday that Stokes needs a life-saving transplant but was denied due to “noncompliance.” The teen suffers from dilated cardiomyopathy – the heart’s main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, fails to pump enough blood.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston issued a statement: “As we stated previously, a heart transplant evaluation is an ongoing process based on the patient and his or her family’s ability to meet specific transplant criteria. … Our physician experts are continuing to work with this family to establish a care plan and determine the best next steps for the patient.”

According to officials, he has been given 1A status, which is highest priority.
